Hanga Roa, Easter Island, Chile

We anchored off Easter Island also known as Rapa Nui, a most extraordinary island on latitude 27.15 and longitude -109.4, 3600 km, west of Chile. The name Rapa Nui or Large Rapa was baptized by seaman who sailed around the South Pacific, and native islanders called it the center of Mother Earth. The name Easter Island was coined by Dutch seamen who rediscovered the place by accident on Easter Sunday, April 5th, 1722. Much of the native culture and history is evident around this famous island. Few cruise ships are able to stop here and we feel especially fortunate to make it ashore by tender in a narrow channel strewn with rocks after Onward anchored near the shore.

High on our bucket list, we sailed here to see the famous Moai stone statues, impressive for their size, number and mysterious positioning. Recognized as a UNESCO Site, most of the island is part of a Chilean National park.

Our Azamara excursion guide, Angel was born in the mainland of Chile and speaks German, English, Spanish and Rapa Nui, the native language. Her energy and explanations helped us understand the astounding sights we saw! We believe this amazing island is akin to the Hawaiian islands is to Americans, a prized tropical vacation spot as well as a fascinating archeological wonderland.
