Packing prequel

Packing challenge: 155 nights on a ship, in a 266 sf cabin with limited closet space, various climates, situations and activities requiring a versatile wardrobe.

I like to think I’m ready for climate changes, but tropical humid temperatures are a big contrast to December’s Mile-High dry, cold weather. I’ve consumed all online packing tips, veteran travelers’ advice, average weather charts, excursion recommendations, and made numerous lists. I’ve tried to assemble a travel wardrobe that is washable, conservative yet stylish, color-coordinated, comfortable, practical and lightweight. I’ve thought about outfits for excursions such as hiking, swimming, sightseeing, yoga, dining, camel-riding, four-wheeling, snorkeling, sailing, concerts, wine-tasting, ship-board celebrations, truffle hunting, lounging and shopping.

Stockpiling six months of prescription medications is not simple. Collecting over-the-counter drugs to treat common ailments and vitamins, sunscreen and insect repellent, cosmetics, eye-drops, dental paraphernalia and pain-relievers and fitting all into suitcases filled with various footwear, refillable water bottles, day packs and rain gear.

United Airlines will be hauling us and four checked suitcases weighing 70lbs apiece, two carry-on cases, a backpack and a tote bag! And, we plan a stop at Costco in Florida for the last-minute stuff.

Getting our financial house in order to pay bills automatically, manage the taxes and insurance payments was an unpleasant chore along with cash to pay for incidentals, souvenirs and tips with American greenbacks. Credit cards have been getting a work-out.

We moved to a condo from our high-maintenance home three years ago, which makes leaving worry-free. Our niece, student Dr. Lauren Haley, will be here studying and keeping an eye on our home. Jerry’s role as President of the HOA and my board posts on GoodWill Colorado and Junior Achievement allow us to electronically fulfill responsibilities remotely. Trusty I-phones, I-pad , earphones, and a host of battery-chargers and cords, electric converters are a necessity.

WIFI can be spotty, we know, depending on location and other conditions. This blog is my way of communicating with close friends and family and your comments and feedback will be appreciated! Stay tuned for updates as we migrate toward embarkation in Ft. Lauderdale on Friday, Jan. 5.
