Grande Dolce Vita

Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain

After a mind-boggling, 24 hour journey, including an 11+ hour trip from Johannesburg, South Africa to Amsterdam, Netherlands, and layovers in airport lounges, we staggered off the third flight at Gran Canaria, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, off northwestern Africa. The capital city Las Palmas is a stop for cruise ships, and we rejoin the Azamara Onward tomorrow as it stops to refuel.

The Canary Islands, an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, hold a unique place in history. Formed from volcanic eruptions, these islands are just 62 miles from the African continent, but a full 1,056 miles from the Spanish mainland. Their volcanic origins are evident in the rugged landscapes and the islands played a crucial role during the Age of Exploration. Christopher Columbus used the Canary Islands as a strategic stopover on his way to the Americas.

The Santa Catalina hotel opened in 1890, it is the oldest hotel in all the Canary Islands. We are delighted we chose to end our side trip here. Thanks to its location, it became a favorite for travelers from all over the world, according to its website, particularly in the late 1950s and 60s. “Gregory Peck took refuge there after playing Captain Ahab, shooting scenes from ‘Moby Dick’ on the Las Canteras beach, under director John Huston. The hundred-year-old memories in its rooms also conjure up smoke from Winston Churchill’s cigars, echoes of the voice of the soprano Maria Callas, the smouldering gaze of Ava Gardner and the dreamy although somewhat distracted look of Agatha Christie”. I expect to see movie stars hanging out by the pool, but we don’t feel like celebs in our limited, road-worn wardrobe. A nice spa fixed my aches and made my skin glow, so I’m back in shape to cruise!

After a scrumptious breakfast — beautiful, delicious selection, we got some steps in a walk about the tropical grounds and adjoining park. The flora and fauna are sensational, and lunch by the marina with many sailboats, we looked at the nearby port where Onward will undoubtedly dock! It will be nice to get back onboard after our vacation from our vacation! We realize we are living la dolce vita!

Does hubby look a little ragged after 11+ hours flight from Joburg? Tulips brighten and refresh weary travelers!

The giraffes are following us from Africa! They are such amazing and majestic creatures and artist muses.

Outdoor fitness park — nice form!

Lovely artist Elena Gomez Aristu — We purchased some of her colorful art. Now if we can get it home unscathed!
