Ko Samui is a small island in southern Thailand featuring iconic Buddhist temples and statues, beautiful beaches surrounded by gorgeous clear sea, coconut plantations and sweltering heat and humidity. Air Conditioning and cold beer is definitely a necessity as we venture out of our comfortable Onward cabin to explore.
Buddhism is one of the world's largest religions and originated 2,500 years ago in India. Buddhists believe that the human life is one of suffering, and that meditation, spiritual and physical labor, and good behavior, karma, are the ways to achieve enlightenment, or nirvana. And yoga, of course!
Talk about Monkey Business! Monkeys are used in the harvest of coconuts, although we didn’t get to see the agile critters at work. Agile humans demonstrated the process of getting to the sweet meat inside the hard nut. Excellent health benefits are attributed to coconut oil, water, and coconut meat. Some criticize the use of monkeys, but it is the best way to increase safety and production of this critical product which is exported around the globe. The monkeys go to monkey school for training and a good professional is extremely valuable — they’re treated like family even after they retire! Maybe this practice is like using trained truffle dogs to produce the rare culinary treasure.
